Chinese Writing Stone, Diamond, with a Hematite Tongue

Chinese Writing Stone is a limestone matrix with andalusite crystals.  It received the name Chinese Writing Stone because of the crystalline structure resembling the Chinese characters of the written language.

The stone is known to be found in the Auburn , California region of the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas and was origianally found in road cuts.

Colors range from a very dark gray or almost black to creamy white, both of which have a slight greenish cast.  A dramatic looking stone, it is a 5-6 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Diamond is a mineral composed of pure carbon.  Diamond is the hardest natural substance, with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, so it can be cut or polished only by another diamond.   Diamond derives its name from the Greek word adamas, which means “invincible”.  Diamonds are beautiful symbols of love around the world.

Hematite is a silvery, shiny opaque stone that almost looks like metal.  Hematite is heavy and relatively hard oxide mineral, that constitutes the most important iron ore because of its high iron content (70%) .  Hematite derives its name from the Greek word haem (blood).   It is a hardness of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale.
